Question

The bookshop of a particular school has 10 dozen chemistry books, 8 dozen physics books, 10 dozen economics books. Their selling prices are Rs 80, Rs 60 and Rs 40 each respectively. Find the total amount the bookshop will receive from selling all the books using matrix algebra.

Solution

It is given that bookshop have 10 dozen chemistry books, 8 dozen physics book and 10 dozen economics books.

Since, 1dozen=12units, thus,

No. of chemistry books will be 10×12=120units

No. of physics book will be 8×12=96units

No. of economics book will be 10×12=120units

Let matrix A represents the number of books of chemistry, physics and economics,

Thus,

A=[ 120 96 120 ]

Let matrix B represents the selling price of the books, thus,

B=[ 80 60 40 ]

Total amount that bookshop will receive from selling all the books will be equal to multiplication of No. of books and selling price of each books, thus,

AB=[ 120 96 120 ][ 80 60 40 ] =9600+5760+4800 =20160

Therefore, the total amount received by bookshop after selling the books is Rs20160.
