Hemoglobin molecules from red blood cells are broken down into two subunits, heme (iron-containing portion) and globin. The heme further breaks down into iron and a green pigment called biliverdin. Biliverdin then is converted to an orange pigment called bilirubin. Hence bilirubin is a breakdown end product of heme-containing proteins. About 80% of bilirubin are formed from the degradation of erythrocyte hemoglobin in the reticuloendothelial system (RES).
