Solution

Let the original bus and train fares be 3x and 4x respectively. [1 mark]

As the bus fare increases by 10%, the new bus fare is :
3x × 1.1 = 3.3x or 33x10 .......... (Since 10% increase is equivalent to multiplying the quantity by 1.1) [1 mark]
And the train fare increases by 20%, the new fare is :
4x × 1.2 = 4.8x or 48x10 .......... (Since 20% increase is equivalent to multiplying the quantity by 1.2) [1 mark]
Hence the new ratio of bus and train fares
= 33x10:48x10 = 33 : 48 = 11 : 16 [1 mark]
