Question

The cable of a uniformly loaded suspension bridge hangs in the form of a parabola. The roadway which is horizontal and 100 m long is supported by vertical wages attached to the cable, the longest wire being 30 m and the shortest being 6 m. Find the length of a supporting wire attached to the roadway 18 m from the middle.

Let y2=4ax be the equation of parabola where (a,b),(50,30),(18,y) are points on it.
Putting (50,30) in the equation of parabola
y2=4ax, we get,
302=4a×50
a=92
Now equation is
y2=42×9xy2=18x
Let the length of the wire at x=18 be y m
y2=4×92×18y=2×9=18m
