Question

The capacity of a closed cylindrical vessel of height 1 m is 15.4 litres. How many square metres of metal sheet would be needed to make it?

Solution

Given data is as follows:

Volume of the cylinder =15.4 litres and height h=1 m

We have to find the area of the sheet required to make this cylinder.

We know that 1000 litre =1 m3
1 litre =11000m3

Therefore, 15.4 liters =15.41000m3

We know that, Volume =πr2h

Therefore, πr2h=15.41000
227×1×r2=15410000
r2=15410000×722
r2=7×710000
r2=(7100)2
r=7100

Now, using this radius we have to find the Total Surface Area.

Total Surface Area =2πrh+2πr2
=2πr(h+r)

=2×227×7100(1+7100)
=44100(100+7100)
=44100×107100
=0.4708 m2
Therefore, 0.4708 m2 of metal sheet required to make cylindrical vessel.
