Contact process:-

  • The contact process is one of the most common methods of forming Sulphuric acid(H2SO4).
  • In this process not only Sulphuric acid is formed, but Oleum(H2S2O7) and Sulphur trioxide(SO3) is also formed.

Step 1: Formation of Sulphur trioxide

First, Sulphur dioxide and oxygen are combined in a 1:1ratio.

And it is then treated with the catalyst Vanadium pentoxide(V2O5)at a temperature between 400-450°Cand 1-2atmpressure.

This converts the Sulphur dioxide into Sulphur trioxide:

2SO2(g)Sulphurdioxide+O2(g)Oxygen1-2atmV2O5,(400-450)°C2SO3(g)Sulphurtrioxide

Step 2: Formation of Sulphuric acid

Now this Sulphur trioxide formed is reacted with Sulphuric acid in order to dilute it.

in this process Oleum(H2S2O7) is formed:

SO3(g)Sulphurtrioxide+H2SO4(aq)SulphuricacidH2S2O7(aq)Oleum

This Oleum formed is then diluted with water to ultimately yield Sulphuric acid:

H2S2O7(aq)Oleum+H2O(l)WaterH2SO4(aq)Sulphuricacid

Therefore, the catalyst used in making H2SO4 in contact process is Vanadium pentoxide(V2O5).
