Question

The charge to mass ratio for the particles of the cathode rays obtained from different gases was found to be the same while the charge to mass ratio for the particle. Of the anode ray obtained from different gases was found to be different.why?

Solution

In cathode ray , the electrons are responsible ... They have constant charge of -1 .

While ,
In anode rays , the cations (+ive gaseous atoms) are responsible . They can be +1 , +2 etc ... So charge is not constant . hence e/m ration is not constant .

A gas may get +1 with given voltage , while it will get +2 if we increase the voltage a bit .... Hence e/m ratio is not constant .. It is here depending on voltage !
