Question

The Chemical Reaction Either Caused Or Accompanied By the Passage of an Electric Current Are Called __________Reactions

Open in App
Solution

Electrochemical reactions

  1. An electrochemical reaction is a process in which electrons flows between a solid electrode and electrolyte.
  2. In electrochemical reaction, oxidation is essentially the loss of electrons found on the surface of an atom, ion or molecule.
  3. An opposite of oxidation is the reduction which is the gaining of loss electrons.
  4. Example: A sample experiment involving a molten salt Sodium chloride it dissociates to its ions- Na+(Cation) and Cl- (anion).
  5. In electrolysis of molten Sodium chloride, it is melted and two electrodes are inserted into melted Sodium Chloride and electric current is passed through it and hence reaction occurs at anode and cathode.
  6. Reaction at anode and cathode: Anode: Na++e-Na Cathode: 2Cl-+2e-Cl2
