Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) are a group of chemicals that contribute to the destruction of the ozone layer above the earth's surface. CFCs are widely used as refrigerants. CFCs discharged in the lower part of the atmosphere move upward and reach the stratosphere. In the stratosphere, UV rays act on them, releasing chlorine atoms. Cl degrades ozone, releasing molecular oxygen. These chlorine atoms act merely as catalysts; they are not consumed in the reaction, resulting in series of reactions that get repeated. Hence, CFCs that get added to the stratosphere have permanent and continuing effects on the ozone layer. This has resulted in the formation of a large area of thinned down ozone layer, commonly called as the ozone hole.
