Solution

Berrylium is the first member of Group 2. It differs from other members of its group owing to its small size and relatively high electronegativity and availability of only 4 orbitals (one 2s and three 2p) in the valence shell. So, Be forms bonds with appreciable covalent character due to high polarising power of Be cation. Also, Be salts hydrolyze in aqueous solution to produce H3O+ ions due to formation of stronger Be-O bond.
