Solution

Approach:

  1. Discuss about the China Pakistan Economic Corridor.
  2. Mention about the impact of the CPEC in the Pakistan economy.
  3. Mention about the challenges to the economic corridor.
  4. Discuss the possibility of end of the China- Pakistan evergreen friendship.
  5. Provide an appropriate conclusion.

China Pakistan Economic Corridor:

China Pakistan Economic Corridor is a collection of infrastructure projects connecting the Kashgar in China with the Gwadar Port in Pakistan. It contains development of highways, pipelines, power projects, railways among other connectivity infrastructures. It helps China to bypass the dilemma of the Malacca strait and direct access to the Indian Ocean.

CPEC and Pakistan economy:

The Pakistan economy receives much needed foriegn investments through the CPEC which is around 46 Billion USD. Some of the benefits of the CPEC to Pakistan are

  • Development of connectivity between the important cities along the CPEC.
  • Increase in employment opportunities.
  • Reduction in the energy deficiency through power projects.
  • Business opportunities for horticulture products.
  • Development of tourism in Northeastern Pakistan.
  • Attraction of the foriegn direct investments.

Challenges in the CPEC:

The CPEC runs through the distrubed parts of the Gilgit Balistan and the Xinjiang province. This poses the real security threat in the operation of the project. The terrorist activities in these regions are not completely controlled. The seperatist movement in the Balochistan province further complicates the project implementation.

The opacity of the investments and the ability of Pakistan to pay back the debt remains the main threat the sovereignty of Pakistan. The opposition to the project by India as it runs through the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir further adds up trouble to the project.

End of the Pakistan - China evergreen relationship:

It is evident from the present economic prospects of Pakistan that it is very difficult to pay back the huge debt to China. At the end of the day all is about the returns from the investments. This definitely affects the relation between Pakistan and China but the end of it is less possible. The main reason is Pakistan needs China for investments and China needs Pakistan for its energy security. Moreover the Indian factor will remain as common ground on which these both countries remain united.

Conclusion:

The geopolitical interest and the energy security of China makes the better relations between China and Pakistan inevitable. Due to this reason Chinese will not back from this project and it needs active Pakistan support. Hence the assertive China instead of breaking the relation with Pakistan would try to influence the policies of Pakistan for in Chinese interest.
