Question

The cliestogamousflower of oxalis undergoes self pollination- what could be the disadvantage to this plant? mention any 2 ways how self pollination is escaped in some plants

Solution

The continued self pollination in Oxalis results in inbreeding depression. This reduces fertility and variation among these plants.

The two ways adapted by plants to discourage self pollination are:
1. Pollen release and stigma receptivity are not synchronised i.e either pollen is released before stigma becomes receptive or stigma becomes receptive before pollens are released.
2. Self incompatibility. This is genetic method to prevent self pollination.
