The equivalent shear, a function of the actual shear and torsional moment is detern1ined from the following empirical relation:
Ve=Vu+1.6(Tu/b)

where
Ve = equivalent shear,
Vu = actual shear,
Tu = actual torsional moment,
b = breadth of beam.
Minimum shear reinforcement is to be provided as per cl. 26.5.1.6 of IS 456, if the equivalent nominal shear stress τve obtained from Ve calculated above, does not exceed τcgiven in Table 19 of IS 456.
