Question

The coefficient of volume expansion of glycerine is 49 × 105 K1. What is the fractionl change in its density for a 30 C rise in temperature?

Open in App
Solution

Given, coffcient of volume expansion of glycerine,αV = 49 × 105 K1 Rise in temperature, ΔT = 30 C
Let the volumes of glycerine at T2 and T2 be V1 and V2, then VT2 = VT1 (1 + αVΔT)

As we know volume = mass/density
So, mρT2 = mρT1 (1 + αVΔT)

Here, m = mass of glycerine
ρT1 = Initial density at T1
ρT2 = final density at T2

Therefore,
mρT2 mρT1 = mρT1 = αV ΔT

ρT2ρT2ρT2 = αVΔT

ρT1 ρT2ρT2 = 49 × 105 × 30

ρT1 ρT2ρT2 = 1.47 × 102

Fractionl change in density of glycerine

ρT1 ρT2ρT1

1.47 × 102
