Question

The coefficient of volume expansion of mercury is 5.4×104 C. What is the fractional change in its density for a 80C rise in temperature?

Open in App
Solution

Let the initial volume be V and mass be m.
Density , ρ=mV ....(1)
γ=5.4×104
Change in volume when temperature is increased by 80oC
ΔV=VγΔT=V×5.4×104×80
New volume is V1=V+ΔV=V×5.4×104×80+V
New density is ρ1=mV1=mV+V×5.4×104×80=mV×1.0432=ρ1.0432
Fractional change C=ρρ1ρ
C=.0414
