Ionic compounds are formed when there is a transfer of electron(s) from a metal atom to non-metals in order to satisfy the octet rule. For example one electron is transferred from sodium to chlorine to form sodium chloride. In the process sodium loses one electron and becomes a cation whereas chlorine gains one electron and becomes the anion.
