As per the given data, the ratio of number of moles of C and H is given by,
C:H85.4512:14.551=7.12:14.55=1:2
Therefore, the empirical formula will be CH2.
We know,
Molecular formula=(CH2)n
where, n=Molecular weightEmpirical weight
So, Molecular Formula can be C2H4,C3H6 or C4H8, which are all integral multiple of CH2.
So, it cannot be C2H6 which is a multiple of CH3.
