A cell which is kept in a hypertonic solution such that the 𝚿w inside the cell is high as compared to the surrounding medium, water moves out of the cell into the surrounding medium by a process called exosmosis.
In case of plasmolysis, water moves out of a cell and the cell membrane of a plant cell moves away from its cell wall. Such a cell is known as plasmolysed cell. The space between the cell wall and shrunken protoplast in a plasmolysed cell is occupied by the plasmolysed solution or the hypertonic solution. This condition can be reversed by placing the cell in a hypotonic solution.
