Optical square is based on the principle that a ray of light reflected successively from two surface undergoes a deviation of twice the angle between the reflecting surface. The angle between the reflecting surfaces is kept 450 so that light after double reflection is at an right angle to the incident ray of light.



The optical square is more convenient and more accurate than a cross staff.

Note: Prism square is other instrument that works on the same principle. In a prism square, prism is used which has two reflecting surface I and H fixed at 450.
