Question

The coordinates of the focus of the parabola y2 − x − 2y + 2 = 0 are
(a) (5/4, 1)
(b) (1/4, 0)
(c) (1, 1)
(d) none of these

Solution

(a) (5/4, 1)

Given:
The equation of the parabola is y2 − x − 2y + 2 = 0.
y-12-1=x-2y-12=x-1

Let X = x-1, Y = y-1

Y2=X

Comparing with Y2=4aX:
a=14

Focus = X=a, Y=0=X=14, Y=0=x=14+1, y=1=x=54, y=1

Hence, the focus is at (5/4, 1).
