The cornea is a transparent layer of tissue, continuous with the sclerotic layer that forms the front part of the vertebrate eye over the iris and lens. The main function of the cornea is to change the shape of the lens to enable the image to be focused on the retina. It does so by refracting the light entering the eye onto the lens, thus assisting in the focusing of images onto the retina.
