Question

The correct IUPAC name for PtNH32Cl2

Open in App
Solution

Rules for writing IUPAC name in complex compounds:

  1. The ligand should be named first when naming. The names of the ligands should be written in this order: neutral, negative, and positive. If more than one ligand has the same charge, they should be named alphabetically.
  2. If a ligand has several repetitions (monodentate), we employ prefixes such as di, tri, tetra, Penta, and Hexa, correspondingly. We use the terms –bis-, tris-, tetrakis, and so on for polydentate ligands.
  3. An anion ending in e becomes ato, sulfate becomes sulfato, and e becomes 'ido,' cyanide becomes cyanido. The names of neutral ligands are the same as they are for active ligands.
  4. After that, write the centre atom/name. ion's Except in the instance of mercury, if the complex is an anion, it will end in –ate and its Latin name will be given.
  5. Use Roman numerals to designate the oxidation state (in the case of atoms with several oxidation states).
  6. Separate the words "cation" and "anion" at the end (if applicable).

PtNH32Cl2:

  1. Ligands are to be named first in alphabetical order Diaminedichlorido
  2. Now the name of the centre atom is added, Diaminedichloridoplatinum.
  3. At the last oxidation state of the centre, the atom has to be written in roman, This is a neutral compound so the overall charge is zero, Ammonia is also neutral, and Chlorine has a -1 charge. Let the oxidation state of Platinum be “x”
  4. x+2(0)+2(-1)=0,x=+1
  5. The final name with oxidation state is Diaminedichloridoplatinum(I).

Therefore, the correct IUPAC name for PtNH32Cl2 is Diaminedichloridoplatinum(I).
