Question

The correct order of the OO bond length in O2,H2O2 and O3 is

Open in App
Solution

Bond length:

  • The bond length of a molecule is the distance between the nuclei of two chemically linked atoms.
  • It is close to the total of the covalent radii of the two linked atoms.

Bond order:

  • The bond order shows the number of chemical bonds present between a pair of atoms
  • The more the bond order, the larger the pull between the two atoms and the shorter the bond length.
  • Bond order can be found out by using the formula:

Bondorder=(Bondingmoleculesnumberofelectrons)(Antibondingmoleculesnumberofelectrons)2

Calculation of Bond order of O2:

  • Electronic configuration of O2 (Z=16)

[σ(1s)]2[σ(1s)]2[σ(2s)]2[σ(2s)]2[σ(1pz)]2[π(2px)]2[π(2py)]2[π(2px)]1[π(2py)]1

  • So, Bond order =10-62=2
  • Similarly the bond order of H2O2 and O3 is 1and 1.5.

So, the order of bond length is O2<O3<H2O2.
