The myelencephalon is also known as medulla oblongata. It contains a number of important afferent and efferent tracts of nerves. It also inherit the cross over of the pyramidal tracts, motor, sensory and autonomic nuclei of cranial nerves V, VIII, IX, X, XI, XII. Most of the lower cranial nerves originate from the medulla.
