Question

The critical temperature of CO2 gas and theN2gas are 31oC and -1470C, respectively. Which gas is liquefied easily and why?

Solution

Critical temperature: It is defined as the temperature above which a gas can not be liquefied whatever pressure may apply.

  • Between CO2gas and N2 gas, CO2 has a high critical temperature.
  • Intermolecular forces of attraction between CO2 are strong because it has a high critical temperature.
  • Because of these high intermolecular forces of attraction of CO2, it is easily liquefiable.
