The cubical expansivities of benzene and wood are 1.2×10−3∘C−1 and 1.5×10−4∘C−1, their densities at 0∘C are 9×102kgm−3 and 8.8×102kgm−3 respectively. At what temperature will wood just sink in benzene?

Solution
Let the volume of wood be VWand mass be mW.
So ρw=mWVW=8.8×102 ....(1)
Let the volume of benzene be Vband mass be mb.
So ρb=mbVb=9×102 ....(1)
When the Temperature is increased by ΔT,
Volume of wood be VW1=VW(1+γwoodΔT)
and mass be mW
So ρw1=mWVW(1+γwoodΔT)=8.8×102(1+γwoodΔT) ....(3)
Volume of benzene be Vb1=Vb(1+γbenzeneΔT)
and mass be mb.
So ρb1=mbVb(1+γbenzeneΔT)=9×102(1+γbenzeneΔT) ..(4)
So if both densities become same, wood will start sinking i.e. ρw1=ρb1
