Question

The degree of freedom of a three atomic molecule can not be 5. true=1, false=0

Open in App
Solution

A polyatomic linear molecule having N molecules has :
(i) 3 translation degrees of freedom .
(ii) 2 rotational degrees of freedom .
(i) 3N5 vibrational degrees of freedom .
Hence total degrees of freedom ,
f=3+2+3N5=3N
But for a triatomic linear molecule , if there is no vibrational motion then
f=5 , the degrees of freedom for a triatomic molecule can be 5 .
Given statement is false=0.
