The densities of wood and benzene at 0C are 880kg/m3 and 900kg/m3 respectively. The coefficients of volume expansion are 1.2×103/C for wood and 1.5×103/C for benzene. At what temperature will a piece of wood just sink in benzene?

The correct option is B 83C.
The wood will just sink in the benzene when densities of both are equal,
i.e., ρ1=ρ2.
Now, as density is inversely proportional to volume, ρ=ρo/(1+γθ)
where γ is coefficient of volume expansion and θ is the change in temperature.
Let change in temperature for obtaining equal densities be θ.
so from given values, 8801+1.2×103×θ=9001+1.5×103×θ
θ=83oC
So final temperature at which wood would just get sink is 0o+θ=83oC
