Question

The density of a mixture of N2 and O2 at NTP is 1.3 gL1. Calculate partial pressure of O2.

Open in App
Solution

Let n1 and n2 moles of N2 and O2 be present in the mixture respectively.
Average molecular mass of the mixture =28n1+32n2n1+n2..(i)
Average molecular mass from general gas equation,
M=DP×RT=1.31×0.0821×273=29.137..(ii)
So, 28n1+32n2n1+n2=29.137 or 4n2n1+n2=1.137
or n2n1+n2=0.28= mole fraction of oxygen
Partial pressure of O2=0.28×1=0.28 atm.
