The density of phosphorus vapour at 310C and 775 torr is 2.64 g dm3.. What is the molecular formula of phosphorus?

We know that, P=dMRT or M=dPRT
Given, d=2.64 g dm3
P=775760atm

R=0.0821 dm3atm K1mol1
and T=310+273=583 K

So, M=2.64×0.0821×583×760775=123.9 g mol1
Atomic mass of P=31 g mol1
No. of P atoms in a molecule =123.931=3.9974
Hence, molecular formula of phosphorus =P4
