Question

the density of the atmosphere at sea level is 1.29 kg /m2. Assume that it does not change with altitude. The how high would the atmosphere extend?

Solution

Use formula,
where P is atmospheric pressure,
1.29kgm2 is density of atmosphere.
g is acceleration due to gravity.
here given, =ρ= 1.29kgm3
,P = 1.013×105 Nm2 and g = 9.8ms2
P=ρgh = 1.013×105(1.29×9.8)
≈ 8013 km
hence, atmosphere extended 8013km high from the sea level.
