Question

The density of water 1.0 g cm3. The density of iron is 7.8 g cm3. The density of mercury is of 13.6 g cm3. Answer the following :

(a) Will a piece of an iron float or sink in water?

(b) Will a piece of an iron float or sink in mercury?

The density of water 1.0 g cm3
(a) Density of piece of iron = 7.8× 103 g cm3 < 1gcm3
∴ The density of a piece of iron is LESS than the density of water.
Hence, a piece of iron will FLOAT in water.

(b) Density of piece of iron = 7.8× 103
Density of mercury is 13.6× 103 g cm3
Since 7.8× 103 < 13.6× 103

∴ Density of piece of iron is LESS than the density of mercury.
∴ The piece of iron will FLOAT in mercury.
