Human teeth are thecodont, diphyodont and heterodont. They are found embedded in jaw sockets, hence called thecodont. Humans have two sets of teeth. The milk teeth which appear first and are progressively replaced by the permanent teeth. This type of dentition, where there are two sets of teeth is called diphyodont. The number, size and shape of teeth are related to diet in animals. On the basis of structure and function of each type of tooth, four different of teeth are present in humans. We possess 32 permanent teeth, consisting of 8 incisors, 4 canines, 8 premolars and up to 12 molars. This type of dentition is called heterodont, unlike homodonts who have the same type of tooth in their dentition.
