A step-down transformer is used to decrease the voltage in electrical power supply. The voltage coming from a higher substation is decreased to a desired level, by passing it through a step-down transformer which consists of two coils wound on two soft iron cores. The primary coil contains more number of coils than the secondary one. A step-up transformer does the opposite job of a step-down transformer.
