Electrostatic precipitators (ESPs) are the devices which remove the particulate material present in air as pollutants; they use electrical force to move particles from the air stream to the collection plates. Particles passing via a precipitator are given a negative charge by being forced to pass through a region called a corona. Once the negatively charged particle passes, it is forced to attach to the positively charged plate. Particles are removed from the plate by a knocking action.
