Question

The diagram below shows two test-tubes A and B. Test-tube A contains a green water plant. Test-tube B contains both a green water plant and a snail. Both Test-tubes are kept in sunlight. Answer the questions that follow :

(a) Name the physiological process that releases the bubbles of oxygen.

(b) Explain the physiological process as mentioned above in Q.2(a) (i).

(c) What is the purpose of keeping a snail in test-tube 'B' ?

(d) Why does test-tube 'B' have more bubbles of oxygen ?

(e) Give an example of a water plant that can be used in the above experiment.

(f) Write the overall chemical equation for the above process.

Solution

A)Photosynthesis

B)Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants and some other organisms use sunlight to synthesize nutrients from carbon dioxide and water. The process involves the green pigment chlorophyll and generates oxygen as a by-product.

C). Snail will exhale CO2 by the process of respiration and hence provide carbon-dioxide essential for the photosynthesis process.

D) As more CO2 is available for plant which is released by snail during respiration the rate of photosynthesis of the plant increases and thus more oxygen is evolved , hence more bubbles.

E)Hydrilla

F). 6 CO subscript 2 plus 12 straight H subscript 2 straight o rightwards arrow over leftwards arrow with chlorophyl space and space sunlight on top space space straight C subscript 6 straight H subscript 12 straight O subscript 6 plus 6 straight H subscript 2 straight o plus 6 straight O subscript 2
