The given diagram represents thyroid gland. The thyroid gland secretes three hormones- thyroxine, triiodothyronine and calcitonin. Thyroid is stimulated to secrete its hormones by thyrotropin, hormone from anterior pituitary. Thyroxine and triiodothyronine are iodinated forms of amino acid tyrosine. They are stored in the colloids that fill the follicles and are released to the blood when needed. The stored hormones are enough to supply a person for upto 10 months. Thyroxine controls the general metabolism for regulating the rate of oxidation and production of energy. They maintain the basal metabolic rate of body.. They promote growth of body tissues and development of mental faculties.
