Question

The diagram given below shows an object $ \mathrm{O}$ and its image $ \mathrm{I}$. Without actually drawing the ray diagram, state the type of lens (Converging / Diverging).

Solution

Convex lens:

  1. A convex lens or converging lens focuses the light rays to a specific point.

Diverging lens:

  1. A lens that causes a beam of parallel rays to diverge after refraction, as from a virtual image

Identify the type of lens from the figure

  1. According to the figure, the image generated is virtual, erect, enlarged, and on the same side as the object when it is placed between the optical centre O and focus F (on the left side).
  2. Because the image is magnified (bigger than the object) and on the same side as the object, the lens is a convergent lens (convex lens).

Hence, the lens type is a converging lens.
