The diagram given below shows paths drawn inside a rectangular field 50m long and 35m wide. The width of each path is 5 metres. Find the area of the shaded portion.

Solution

Length of rectangle ABCD =50 m
Breadth of rectangle ABCD =5 m
Area of rectangle ABCD =L×B
=50×5
=250 m2
Length of rectangle EFGH =35 m
Breadth of rectangle EFGH =5 m
Area of rectangle EFGH =35×5
=175 m2
Length of rectangle ILKL =5 m
Breadth of rectangle IJKL =5 m
Area of rectangle IJKL =35×5
=175 m2
Now,
Area of shaded portion = (Area of ABCD + Area of EFGH) Area of IJKL
=(250+175)25
=42525
=400 m2
Hence area of shaded portion is 400 m2
