(iv) How does the arrangement of neurons in the spinal cord differ from that of the brain?

  • In brain, the outer portion of the cerebrum contains cell bodies of the neurons and appear grayish in colour. This is called the gray matter.
  • The inner portion of the cerebrum consists of white matter which mainly contains the axons of the neurons.
  • In spinal cord the arrangement of white matter and gray matter is reversed from that in the brain.
  • Here, the gray matter lies on the inner side and the white matter on the outer side.
