Figure: Prophase stage of mitosis
a) The diagram given in the question represents the metaphase stage of mitosis during cell division as during this stage of mitosis, chromosomes move to the spindle equator and get aligned to the metaphase plate.
b) Before the metaphase stage comes the prophase stage as shown in the figure. In prophase, spindles fibers begin to form and chromatin gets condensed to form chromosomes and the nuclear membrane begin to disappear.
