The epiglottis is flap of cartilage located in the throat behind the tongue and in front of the larynx. The thyroid gland is the biggest gland in the neck. It is situated in the anterior (front) neck below the skin and muscle layers. The cartilage rings in the trachea prevent the trachea from collapsing during absence of air and also protect it. These cartilagenous ring are C-shaped. The trachea (windpipe) is a wide, hollow tube that connects the larynx (voice box) to the bronchi of the lungs.
