The diagram shown is the lateral section of a testis of matt. Study it carefully and answer the questions that follow:

(i) Label the parts 1 to 4 of the diagram.

(ii) State the functions of the parts labelled 1 and 3.

(iii) Draw a labelled diagram of a sperm.

Part (i)

1 - Vas deferens; It originates from the testis.

2 - Vasa efferentia; originates from the seminiferous tubules.

3 - Epididymis; It is a highly coiled structure.

4 - Seminiferous tubule; Sperms are produced in the seminiferous tubules of the testis.

Part (ii)

  1. Vas deferens arise from each testis and transport the mature sperm from the epididymis to the urethra.
  2. Vasa efferentia are small tubules that arise from the seminiferous tubules and transport the sperms to the epididymis.
  3. The epididymis is a highly coiled structure where the sperms are stored, concentrated and mature.

Part (iii)

  1. The sperm contains the head region, middle piece, and tail.
  2. The Head contains the nucleus and acrosome.
  3. Mitochondria is present in the middle piece.
  4. Tailor the flagellum helps in sperm locomotion.
