Needle of Magnetic compass shows the direction of magnetic field. Because from end X magnetic field lines are coming out and from end Y field lines will inter into the magnet. Hence all field lines come out form end X and will inter into the end Y so above image will show the direction of magnetic or compass needle at points B, C and D.
