Question

The diagram shows a rough plank resting on a cylinder with one end of the plank on rough ground. Neglect friction between plank and cylinder. Draw diagrams to show: (a) the forces acting on the plank, (b) the forces acting on the cylinder.

Solution

Since, there is no friction between plank and cylinder, cylinder with tend to move in clockwise direction, and since it is placed on rough surface , friction on cylinder ( f2 ) will act in forward sense. Also, the touching end of plank will move in forward sense, so friction ( f1 ) on it will act in backward direction.
