Respiration is a chemical process performed by green plants in which food molecules are oxidized to release oxygen and energy for the various vital activities of the cell.

The energy released in this process is in the form of ATP which is stored in the mitochondria. The oxygen released is used by the candle to keep burning as well as the mouse for breathing.
