Question

The diameter of a copper sphere is 18 cm, It is melted and drawn into a long wire of uniform cross-section. If the length of the wire is 108 m, find its diameter.

Solution

Given: The diameter of the sphere =18 cm.
So, Radius =9 cm.
The volume of a sphere =4πr33=4π(9)33=972π cm3

Since volume is constant even after melting

The volume of the long wire will also be equal to 972π cm3

The length of wire =108 m=10800 cm.

The long wire is assumed to be the cylinder.

So volume of the long cylindrical wire =πr2h

πr2×10800=972π

r2=97210800

r2=0.09

r=0.09=0.3 cm

Diameter of the long cylindrical wire, d=2r=2×0.3=0.6 cm
