Question

The diameter of the moon is approximately one-fourth of the diameter of the earth. Compare their volume and curved surface area.

Open in App
Solution

Let the diameter of earth be d and that of the moon will be d4
Radius of the earth re=d2
Radius of the moon rm=d8

We know that surface area of sphere =4πr2
Ratio of their surface area =Surface area of MoonSurface area of Earth=4πrm24πre2
=4πd824πd22
=16414
=464
=116

Thus, the ratio of their surface areas is 1:16.

Similarly, volume of a sphere is 43πr3

Volume of MoonVolume of Earth=43πr3m43πr3e

=r3mr3e

=(d8)3(d2)3

=(d8)3×(2d)3

=8512

=164

Thus, the ratio of their volumes is 1:64.
