Question

The diameters of the neck and the bottom of a glass bottle are 2 cm and 8 cm respectively. The bottle is completely filled with olive oil. If the cork in the bottle's neck is pressed in with a force of 1.4 kgf, calculate the force exerted on the bottom in kgf.

Solution

The correct option is A 22.4
Given:
The diameter of the neck, d1=2 cm
The diameter of the bottle, d2=8 cm
Area of a circle diameter2
A1d21 and A2d22, where A1 and A2 are the areas of cross section of the neck and the bottom respectively.
The force applied on the neck, F1=1.4 kgf
If F2 is the resultant force exerted on the bottom, then from Pascal's law:
F2F1=A2A1, when A1<A2
F2F1=d22d21
F2=F1d22d21=1.4×8222
F2=1.4×16=22.4 kgf
