let the number is 'x'.
from the question we can write the equation as below;

{(3/5)(2/3)x} - {(2/5)(1/4)x}=288
taking the common factor 'x' outside;
x{(2/5)-(1/10)}=288
(making the denominator same for the easiness of calculation)
x{(4/10)-(1/10)}=288
(3/10)x=288
x=288×(10/3)
=960.
